Supporting the National Bone Marrow Registry
Earlier in the year, APPNA DMV and Be The Match got together for a fun afternoon of socializing, bowling and increasing the number of minorities on the National Bone Marrow Registry! A Be The Match representative was on site to sign up people.
Why is diversity important in bone marrow transplants?
When it comes to matching human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types for bone marrow transplants, a patient’s ethnic background is important in predicting the likelihood of finding a match. This is because HLA markers used in matching are inherited. Some ethnic groups have more complex tissue types than others. So a person’s best chance of finding a donor may be with someone of the same ethnic background.
